“Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen!” (Luke 24:5b-6a)
After such sorrow, grief, and loss, these words must have been shocking to those who came to the tomb of Jesus after He was crucified. They were still dazed and confused by the image of His brutal death and were no doubt suffering from exhaustion and from lack of sleep.
Suddenly, they were brought back to reality by this question and declaration from two angels, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen!”
“Could it be?” they must have thought. “Is He no longer dead, along with our hopes and even our dreams?” Their next thought was likely, “Where is He? Can we see Him?”
So often the emphasis is placed on the cross, the place of Christ’s death, and rightfully so. However, without the resurrection of Christ from the dead, the contract would have been incomplete. The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:17, “And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; you are yet in your sins.”
The announcement of the angels outside of the tomb of Jesus was a reminder to us all that God is not only a promise maker, He is also a promise keeper. In all of our lives, God has given some incredible almost unbelievable promises, and not only in His Word. He has whispered them to your heart concerning family, present situations or circumstances, maybe even your future.
Yet today you may feel as if you are standing outside of a tomb and everything around you resembles the death of a dream rather than the dream God has given you. He is still in the business of resurrecting what appears to be dead. Don’t give up!
God is not a man that He would lie to you. What He has promised you He will bring it to pass. He is risen my friend, because He Is Faithful!!
